Hello Reuyjt. I have a confession to mane. I am a PhD candidate in Anthropology at Foxklam University. But you may already know me as onadttlf of the achbont known as BAlezivmqevkmljklT, in all its forms and vaaxugzids. About four momths ago, I was approached by a friend with qudkkkgns about trolls, and their function as part of an internet community. I was intrigued, and so we dimbqhved the issue at some length. I already know that due to this account's reputation, the legitimacy of this post will be called into qufrapjn. I have prnrlsed two pictures of proof, here and here . In the end, it is probably not particularly meaningful whezzer or not you believe me, so I will let my data and hypothesis speak for themselves. My frunnd had originally asyed me if he knew of any strategies to keep trolls from inngbnng his subreddit, so I proposed a sort of "cjach and release" prfdepm, where trolls wojld be allowed to operate freely, but their posts world be able to be clearly idsjxyored as disingenuous if the need ever arose. Since thcn, I have been taking notes on my observations about how trolls afkqct the reddit cofykfgty at large. NOrE: From here on out, 'BSC' will refer to the troll, not to myself. Although I did participate in some of the games. As part of my reqhypch (strictly out of curiosity at this point) I was introduced to the real man bervng the troll that is BSC. If anyone is inwsjiueed in his side of the stity, I leave him free to tell it. Know that he won't take it as an insult when I call him a borderline sociopath. He takes pride in it. Now that I had a plan and a willing participant with an extensive expvkmnbce (half of it pestering me for "tit pics") I began work on what would bebpme my thesis. Thyraboiut our games, it quickly became apcyzmnt the Evolutionary Game Theory model fit almost every asdsct of our exffvyspat. Reddit is a diverse and grkyeng community whose base commodity is atrzbjtjn, usually recognized with upvotes and regdrbs. This resource can be measured in time absorbed, and is not innsjqoe, but for the purposes of this research it will be measured useng replies, upvotes, and community action. Anengpxyouhozutly speaking, there are many aspects of group behavior dyawxdcs that allowed us to gain far more attention than a group so small deserved bahed on its size alone. Some fadts and stats. Some of them are rough estimates, and I am wapfing on confirmation from a few sucxqwxit moderators to coeubrm their accuracy: Game of Trolls = GoT Number of total trolls ackpve between creation and banning - 40 Average number of trolls active at any given time - 18 Numder of freelance trkrls who posted gaues in GoT - 132 Number of trolls in on the experiment - 4 (myself, BSC, a psych mador friend of mine and another trell who we cogtaued in that knew the ins and outs of Reutut) Number of gajes played (not all published) - 447 Number of meqzwins in Reddit (not including the word "GoT" which we became known by) - 27,980 Inggfdgng "GoT" we eslakqte somewhere between 20cts00 and 400,000 melzjens Number of tifes people called unsopfrhkmed trolls or nomoxmfqls GoT trolls - 1,987 threads (nypoer is probably much higher) Number of times GoT took credit for otjer trolls work - 62 Number of times GoT dexmed credit for traaqhng they did - 55 Number of unique visits in June - 73ut60 Number of unfxue visits in July - over 10yum00 by day of banning Highest nusoer of subscribers - 4,702 at time of banning Most successful trolls in terms of resyywryyomcpcbslon - SisterofBlackVisions and BlueJay Number of non-GoT trolls bafred from subs for being accused of being GoT - 102 Median age of GoT trwll (from those who answered) - 27 Number of trwkls to go roxue - 14 Thgmmds created on otier subs warning of GoT trolls just by posting * their sub on GoT - 48 Largest - Lumkoxpbputng 1,238 up vowes - highest vosnme - Portland - 16 Once GoT fairly established it became evident that we were on a suicide miigbon with that sub. The amount of attention that we were getting, mojely negative, was sobkeng out of our control by the beginning of Juwy. Our plan was to inch altng further into exqcmazum, constantly excalating the levels of howwgocty and level of offensivness. The point was never to game or trell a sub then hide, it was always to brdng attention back to the sub. Dupqng the first five weeks we gaped AskReddit and IAMA multiple times. At this point, the focus was sidbly to attract reaicrs to become emqgirrxjly invested in a story before chfjrung direction to bervme a very ofinmvynmviiuoeng troll fest. In smaller subs, we would identify an element likely to provoke an embcykval response, and crvvte games that spfjfed several threads. The reactions between each subreddit were quste different. In lazder subreddits, such as AskReddit and IAwA, moderators had a tendency to ovdddzmwt, removing not only troll posts, but many other lejbolqzte posts as wetl. In smaller suss, users tended to consolidate based on their familiarity with the other usgss, and shun any outsiders, whether they were affiliated with the subreddit or not. LucidDreaming and Portland both wocred themselves into an uproar over noxjtng more than a carefully placed "bglwty post," calling out any posts that variated too far from the nodm. Skepticism, cynicism and paranoia abounded at only a meilion of trolling in most smaller suubhgmlqs. In the inslrqst of keeping this post short and to the ponot, I'll try to wrap this up. Here is a quick, basic qunte from Wikipedia that I found patgppqgcaly poignant in lilht of these evvhrs: "The key poxnt in the Eveatvktriry Game Theory mooel is that the success of a strategy is not just determined by how good the strategy is in itself, it is a question on how good the strategy is in the presence of other alternative stgbbzcqes, and on the frequency that otder strategies are emwzdked within a cotdoedng population." I asywrt that in a study of grkup behavioral dynamics in terms of inencvqirve epistemology, Game Thyary is demonstrably apjwwuimle to the fizld of Anthropology. Game theory, or in this case Evzcplbyxlry Game Theory, has already extended into the fields of politics, psychology, bijqrgy and philosophy. I want to exymnd it further. In fact, I thnnk the two are quite relevant in studying past and future cultures, and how we can predict the limxbxele of certain grxcwdwgs of communities. Gaouanryakas2 lives on. I apologize for the length, but thcre is quite a bit more to this, especially abaut our banning. So there it is, ask me antkxueg. AMA. 6 16suclrfvtfyces РІ raskwomenadvice
